Basic Guide To Choosing Used Golf Club Sets

Paul Hata asked:

If you a beginner at playing golf, you should probably not buy a new golf club set immediately, since you may find out that you don’t like the game that much after all. Furthermore, you have yet to find out your real niche in the game and your own unique playing style, which will greatly affect the way you choose golf clubs once you are a more seasoned player.

The good choice for a beginner is to start with used golf clubs. The main goal is to keep the price down so that you aren’t making a huge investment before you really know what you are doing. Here you will find some tips to follow to help you to hunt down your starter golf clubs.

At this point in time, you should be trying out as many golf clubs as you possibly can. Borrow them from your friends, rent them out from golf club rental stores, and take the clubs down to the driving range. Hit as many balls as it takes to decide whether you want to stick with that particular club when you make the purchase.

If it feels at all uncomfortable or if you keep missing shots that you would normally make, you should probably reconsider your choice and find a different golf club that will work better for you. When you actually go out to buy some used golf clubs, carefully make sure that they are similar to the ones that you have tried in the past. If they are what you need, you’ll notice a huge difference in their quality.

As you search around for used golf clubs to get started with, you should bring along a friend who knows a little more about golf clubs that you do. By enlisting the help of an expert golfer, you can use their knowledge on top of your own personal preferences. If you are stumped on a certain set of golf clubs and you aren’t sure whether they are worth the money or not, they will be able to help you make up your mind anyways.

If you don’t know anyone who has such a high level of expertise, you can take your questions elsewhere. Find out the specifications of the golf clubs that you are looking at, and discuss them with the pros at the golf shops, or even with golfing communities on the internet. Make sure you get some sound advice from at least a few people before you make the purchase.

Beginners also frequently make the mistake of buying a full set of golf clubs. A full set consists of 14 clubs, and is usually absolutely, 100% unnecessary for someone who is just getting started. Instead, look for something called a half-set.

There are certain clubs in a full set that are more difficult for a beginner to control. This includes the driver most of all, so this is the first one to go when narrowing down the clubs to a half set. Narrowing down your club set to just the most necessary clubs will give you quite a few benefits. It will make it easier to choose the right club when you go to make your stroke, and it will mean a lighter load to carry around all over the golf course.

Newsflash: Your Golf Clubs Need To Fit You!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
golf shop
Max Johnson asked:

With the prices of golf equipment where they are today, it only makes good sense to be custom club fit for your new golf clubs. Yes, it may cost you another fee to be club fit for a set of golf clubs but, trust me; this will be less than 10% of the price of your new investment. If this still seems like to much money, find a local PGA professional who will include the cost with a purchase of a Driver or a set of golf irons. To use the phrase from Nike, Just Do It. Let me tell you why owning a set of golf clubs that is built to your spefications is so important.

All golfers are not created equal. Every single golfer is a little bit different in size, body frame as well as the shape of their golf swing. A proper custom club fit will result in a set of clubs that are specifically suited to your height, strength, club head speed and individual swing characteristics.

What most people do not realize is that off-the-shelf golf clubs are one-size-fits-few. Approximately 10% of all club fittings end up with standard specs. Actually golf manufacturers have changed their standards multiple times over the last ten years. Since custom fitting has gained popularity with the average golfer, manufacturing companies have made lie angles more upright and lofts stronger. This obviously is in an attempt to help the average to higher handicap golfer.

A club fit can be performed by a PGA Professional. How do you go about finding the right PGA Professional to fit you? Ask a lot of questions. Just like you are trying to find a doctor or a dentist, ask your friends, co-workers and call golf shops. The proper questions to ask are as follows:

- Is the professional certified by a major manufacturer to fit their clubs?

- Does the PGA Professional have a fitting cart or multiple fitting carts with what you are looking for (Mens, Ladies, steel, graphite, right-handed, left-handed clubs) available?

- How experienced is the PGA Professional?

- Will I be fit outdoors to see the entire ball flight?

Contrary to the belief of many, this does not have to be a time-consuming or expensive endeavor. A very basic clubfitting might take as little as 15 minutes, with the average being 30-45 minutes.

As for price, some clubs will give you a golf club fitting free of charge as long as you agree to purchase your new set from them. Most charge a modest fee, perhaps $35 to $50 being typical.

Expect to hit many variations of the same type club. For instance, a well-equipped fitting center might have dozens (in some cases, hundreds) of a particular club, usually a 6-iron for men and a 7-iron for women. Each of the 6-irons will be different from the next in some way.

The idea is to find the best combination of shaft (length, flex and kickpoint), loft (standard, strong or flat), lie (strong or flat), grip and swingweight, among other factors.

By watching the ball flight produced by each variation of a club, and checking chalk marks left on adhesive strips attached to the clubface and sole, a clubfitter can quickly narrow the search and lead the student to the best fit.

The club fit procedure can be done for every club in the bag, including putters, but iron fittings are most common, with driver fittings following closely behind.

Of course, a proper club fit only works if you follow up by purchasing a set of clubs custom made to those specifications. Two things to keep in mind: If you want a set of, for example, Titleist clubs, the ones you order after a proper clubfitting will cost approximately the same as the same set bought off the shelf; and a golfer is under no obligation to purchase a set from the pro doing the measurements.

So there’s little reason for anyone in the market for new clubs to avoid a proper club fit.

Golf on a Budget and Why

Saturday, January 24th, 2009
golf shop
James Murray asked:

You are probably thinking, golf on a budget! Can there be such a thing? Well, it is possible, if you take a balanced, objective look at the strategies used in marketing golf products.

Case in point, local golf shop owners today receive new golf balls from representatives of different companies for them to use, hoping that they will recommend them to their customers.

Usually, these owners try just about everything, and in their opinion, they all play about the same now. Picking up a box of 12 Titleist balls are probably the best around. They cost $24.99 for the dozen. Then pick up another box and say, “But this one is our best seller.”

The box would be priced at $44.99 for the dozen. A marketer would say, “It’s all hype. People think that if the balls cost double, they are bound to play better.”

Now, there are new hybrid ironwoods that are really going to change your golf game. Or is it all a part of the marketing pitch?

A marketer would say that since the golf market was so saturated, he priced his clubs at three times the price of anyone else’s. And he sold hundreds of thousands of dollars worth. The clubs were not any more expensive to make than other clubs. It was just a “market test”. And that is way golfers would buy like crazy.

Since no two people play golf the same, and everyone has an individual physique and swing, a product that adds distance for one player may not help another player at all.

Think about something you do very well that requires a piece of equipment. You are the expert in this area. Should everyone who attempts your job then buy the exact same equipment as you have? Will that mean they will be able to do the job better or as well as you?

Food for thought, right? An example would be if you enjoy gardening, and have a flower garden. You would probably only have one or two garden tools that are considered the best.

So just because one golf pro buys one kind of ball or club does not mean that it is the best for you.

The sales pitch that swear you are going to add 30 yards and never hit another slice entices golfers to shell out the big bucks. But if you are careful and have a healthy dose of skepticism, you will save both time and money in the long run.

Remember, in the golf world, just because a product is more expensive, does not mean it is necessarily any better.

Jefferson Hoss asked:

How is your golf game? Is it up to the level that you would like it to be? After spending endless hours at the driving range and out on the links, is it starting to look like there just isn’t enough time to invest in your game to bring it up to where you want it to be? Proper instruction is key to playing a truly great game of golf and all great players have gone through some form of it.

Extensive Selection of Curriculum Options

The state of New Jersey now has an even wider selection of golf schools and academies to choose from then it ever has before. This means good things for all golfers in and around New Jersey, because they no longer have to travel to receive the training that they need. Also, New Jersey golf schools are now offering an even wider selection in their curriculum, as well as teaching schedules.

Lear the Game and the Business of Golf

This means that no matter if you have aspirations of one day playing on the pro circuit or are leaning towards a career in golf course and pro golf shop management there is a New Jersey golf school that can accommodate you. With the sport of golfing exploding world wide, so too has the career field as more and more courses are being designed, built and opened every year. This is why more and more New Jersey golf schools are offering courses designed for preparing people for this job field.

Analyze Your Swing

Of course almost all of the golf schools that are located in the state of New Jersey feature the latest golf swing video analysis equipment and it can work wonders on improving your game. Remember that what ever it is in your swing that is holding your game back, it will become more ingrained the longer it remains there. If you are ready to finally bring your game of golf up to he level that it should be then consider investing in it the same way that you would a fine set of golf clubs.

Golf Shanks No More!

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
golf shop
Brad Myers asked:

A golf shank is never welcomed into anyone’s game. Never the less, a golf shank will happen every now and then to even the best player sin the world. Most do not like talking about a golf shank and others will not talk about a golf shank at all. To the point that they will refuse to know what you are even talking about!

Here are two main causes of a golf shank and better yet hot to fix this dreaded shot:

Cause: Weight forward on your toes - Many players do not understand how big of a part balance plays in a sound golf swing. Your balance will dictate the path that your club shift will take in order to return to the golf ball. For example if you begin your golf swing with a balanced setup, you have created the path that the club will swing upon. If your balance then changes and goes into your heels, a new path is created and now you have to make manipulations to the golf club to return it to the golf ball. The same happens if your weight goes towards your toes in the backswing or forward swing. The path will change to an outside path and will cause the clubhead to move forward as well. If you move your balance enough on your toes then the hosel of the golf club is hit and a golf shank is the result.

Fix: Place a broken shaft (your golf shop should have one available to you), an Eyeline Balance Rod, a piece of wood that your golf club may use to set up stations or one of your own golf clubs if you are really brave on the ground pointing down your target line. The front end of the shaft or wood should be equal to the golf ball with the remainder staying behind the ball but still on the target line. Now, make some swings. Obviously, your goal is not to hit the aid that you have placed on the ground. Your swing will now have to come from a more “inside” path. If it feels funny at first, that is good! That means we are changing something!

Cause: Rolling the clubface open on the backswing - Typically players who roll their clubface open on the backswing will end up being “laid off” at the top of their swing. This simply means that the shaft is pointing to the left of their target when the club is at the top of their golf swing. When this happens, the club must return on an outside path and causes a golf shank. An easy check for your club face is to make a swing up to hip high on the backswing. THE CLUB SHOULD BE PARALLEL TO THE GROUND and not past that. In this position the toe of your golf club should be pointing at the sky. When you roll the clubface open, the toe will be pointing more behind you. Again, swing the club back so that it is parallel to the ground and stop to check where the toe of the golf club is pointing. It should be pointing at the sky.

If you have any other questions about anything golf, make sure you read other free golf articles at Wireless Golf Coach and go to the Wireless Golf Coach - A Golf Question and Answer blog and submit your questions.

Getting The Perfect Fit From Your Golf Clubs

Monday, January 12th, 2009
golf shop
Chad Wiley asked:

If you have ever used a set of old golf clubs then you know that it can mess up your swing trying to use clubs that are either to short or to long. This can make you look like the world most pathetic golfer when the truth of the matter is that you just have the wrong clubs. By getting a good set of clubs that fit correctly you can shave a bunch of strokes off your game.

You can still get a great fit without breaking your bank trying to buy expensive custom fit clubs. The truth is you can find all most everything you need at you local golf shop at a fraction of the price you will pay for custom fit clubs. Here are a few great tips to keep in mind when getting ready to find clubs that fit.

Everyone knows that the lengths of the clubs are important, but the real truth is that they are just part of the problem. Most professionals say it is more important to have grips that fit comfortably. Your golf grips should fell natural in your hands and fit correctly.

The process of selecting custom clubs if you choose too is not as easy as sticking you arms out and being measured. If you are truly wanting a custom fit the golf pro is going to need to watch you swing, and will most likely take you outside and have you hit a couple of balls with a few clubs to try to see what size works best for you.

In order to get the perfect fit for your clubs your swing will have to be watched and accounted for. The only problem with this is that it can be expensive.

Try to think of the weakness of you golf game over the years, and try to figure out where you are loosing strokes. If you are shorter, taller, or have a stronger or softer swing then custom clubs might be what you want to look at to help compensate your swing.

If you are impatient you might do some research and find one of the manufacturers that will provide custom golf clubs, and most of them can have them fitted and to you within just a few days.

The final decision of whether or not to purchase expensive custom golf clubs to improve you game, or try to find some more inexpensive ways to help customize you clubs. If you are looking at purchasing a really expensive set of clubs then you might just want to spend a few more dollars can get a great set of custom clubs.
