I’m starting as a beginner in golf. I’m now in my 30’s, and this good summer weather is making me think of getting involved in something physical, but not too strenuous. So, I went to the driving range for the first time in forever yesterday. I practiced my swing with a driver, and with time, started to get good, straight drives in. Now I have to look for advice that will make my swing and an eventual 9-hole game “good enough”.

Of course there a lots of websites out there, and I’ve already investigated many. I’ve also started shopping on-line and in stores for a beginner’s gold club set (complete) that can get me by for a couple years while I improve my game.

So do you all have any advice, tips, or references on playing the game and selecting equipment for an adult beginner golfer?
P.S. - I do have a friend who is quite good and experienced teaching me on the range. So please, no answers worth 2 points that read “take lessons” unless you are specific with directions on where or who from to find good lessons from.

Gene- The seven iron came undone when I was playing badly and attempted to “negoitiate” the ball and an oak tree.
If it was my only ultimate club, how could I finish the round and obtain an even higher level of frustration?
Gene- you deserve BA on many levels-particularly for the cautionary note when confronted with a man using a putter on a par three!

But I believe you miss the true spirit of golf (at least the golf I have learned to love), that involves the worthless use of many heavy, unforgiving clubs that consistently highlight ones human frailty!
QT- Thankyou and Jow for your well-founded advise. Your widom could not be even more on target had you been privy to my past attempts at plumbing (we finally got the water to stop) and sheet-rocking (a picture covered most of the damage).
Qt- in the best of all worlds, well deserving of BA. Giving enough time and fortitude it may well have been able to alter my course from a fools mission. But the days are getting short…fewer and fewer opportunities to self-sabatoge via golf!
