It's awe-inspiring from one perspective, easily mockable from another. There is a visitors center and monuments to the Ten Commandments around the base (and, you can press buttons on the granite to listen to sermons on each one - really!) Outlet mall in Tuscola is decent for shopping. You should check out the campus in Champaign if you have not. It's a good midpoint to stop for a meal. Plenty of chain restaurants by the intersection of I-74 and Prospect Ave, but Campustown has been totally rehabbed since I was a student there (eons ago...) and has a nice casual atmosphere. If you really want to get off the beaten track, you can swing by Lake Shelbyville, through Sullivan (cute restaurant on the courthouse square), and up through the Amish community near Arthur before rejoining I-57.
