Why do I have to pump the gas pedal in order for my car to start?

I have ‘94 VW Golf manual transmission. One week ago I had the heating core replaced, and they had to take apart the dashboard, and steering wheel mount, and also cut some wires in order to get to the heating core. The mechanic shop that did this is so shady. I don’t want those people touching my car again! Anyway, before this was done, I never had to press the gas for the car to start. Now I have to give a lot. How is this related to the service that was done or is it coincidence, and how can it be fixed?
